Template FAQ
What browsers are recommended for use with the JavaScript (Association, Personal, Business, and Resume) templates?
The templates make extensive use of the JavaScript programming language. Only the more recent browsers have a JavaScript interpreter that is sufficiently robust to handle the JavaScript used in our templates. These browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and 6.x, and Netscape Communicator 4.x. Please note that the browser's JavaScript option must be enabled prior to using the templates. Failure to have this option set will make the templates unresponsive to button clicks, and no error messages will be provided. (Your browser will be enabled to read JavaScript unless you have changed the Preferences to disable it.) After typing your text into an edit box, you must tab out of the box or use the cursor to move into another box before you see your changes written out to the preview frame. For you techies, you must essentially move focus out of the box before the text is written. All changes are written to the preview frame as described above, but you might have to scroll down in the preview frame to see text that you might have added to the bottom of the page. Use your mouse to drag the frame borders. In the links section of the Association, Personal, and Business templates, you can type in the URL for any other pages that you might have created. Use the Exit button on the left frame. If you know how to use HTML (<H1> . . </H1> or <B> . . </B>), you can create your own headings under an existing heading. The text boxes allow you include HTML tags. If you do not want to use a particular heading, do not type any text in the corresponding text box and the heading will not appear. Uniform Resource Locator. It is the Internet address of a particular page (i.e. www.att.net) Yes, you can edit your published source code in the HTML Editor. Alternately, you can use the FTP tool to copy the source code of the page from our server to your own computer. You will then be able to modify the code with any text editor (including Microsoft WordPad and Notepad). Please note that we strongly recommend that you have a thorough understanding of HTML before you attempt to edit the source. If you alter or delete anything that you are unfamiliar with, you may not be able to use the templates to re-edit your page. The right preview frame is populated as you begin to build your Web page. It should give you an accurate view of how your page will look once it is published. Any time you make changes to the text, colors, or images on your page, the preview frame will be redrawn. Security features within JavaScript make it impossible to save your Web page to the local hard drive while using the templates. You can, however, use the FTP tool to download your file(s) from the Personal Web Pages server. Yes, you can edit your page with the same template you used to first create it. Simply select the file from the list on the File Selection page. The appropriate template will be launched and will contain all elements that were created when you last published your page. Make sure that you have refreshed or reloaded your page and that you are calling out the complete path of the page URL (http://home.att.net/~username for example). Check to make sure you haven't specified the same color for your background and text. (Same applies to background and link color, background and visited link color.) The separators appear in the preview frame after they are selected. For the resume template, the text you type into the Name box is converted into the Web page title by appending 's Resume. For the personal template, the text you type into the Title box is converted into the Web page title. For the business template, the text you type into the Company Name box is converted into the Web page title. For the association template, the text you type into the Name box is converted into the Web page title. If you choose to leave any of these text boxes empty, a default title is constructed. You can test out your links by clicking on them in the preview frame. On some browsers, you might have to click twice on the link in the preview frame in order to test it. To repopulate the preview pane with the page, you can click on the browser's Back button or continue editing, which will eventually update the preview. If you are using the JavaScript templates, you only have to be connected when you publish your page. However, your changes are lost if you move away from the template page. Long filenames are acceptable. You may also include a directory path in your filename. If you pick the name of a file that already exists on your Web site, you will be asked if you wish to overwrite the existing file. You will not be prompted to overwrite a file that you have opened for re-editing, however. If your browser shows you your page after you have published it, the operation was successful. Take a look at the template tutorials. These tutorials are a great way to get familiar with the JavaScript templates. No, we currently only support a single e-mail address in those text boxes. Yes, you can, although you might discover that the operation takes a bit of time to complete when processing large amounts of text. If you cut and paste a huge amount of text, you can also expect a degradation in template performance. There exist some display driver bugs that impact the use of browsers in general. You might try a different display resolution for your display device. Another option is to use the arrow (cursor) keys on your computer's keyboard. It is likely that you are using an unsupported browser. When I'm using a Template and cut and paste an html document from Word into the content area, part of the text is dropped. Why?
Members should be aware that copy/paste limitations exist and are a limitation not of PWP but of the copy/paste functions. |
